Today, Facebook furthered their social media responsibility by announcing their new “Learn With Facebook”, career development site. This is their third phase in adding socially conscious tools that assist people to expand their career networks, business connections, and find good jobs. In 2017 they launched “Jobs on Facebook”. Since then, they have assisted over 1 million people to find a job. They also pledged earlier this year to “train 1 million US business owners and equip more people with the digital skills they need to compete in the modern workplace.” Some critics consider these advances to be in direct competition with LinkedIn and only a saving face move. Mark Zuckerberg has extended huge resources to assist hundreds of millions of people to improve their quality of life. The success of these programs has encouraged them to add more features, all free, to both the Jobs program and their “Mentorship” tool, https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/08/people-can-now-find-mentors-and-mentees-in-groups/, also launched in 2017. Is it possible that they are genuinely interested in assisting Humanity?
Whatever the reason for their new programs, in the last couple of months they have focused on what they can do for human rights, specifically in Myanmar, what they can do to lessen child exploitation, and what they can do to support their community in the face of the opioid epidemic, also announced today. It resonates well that such a huge tech company shows real care for the humans they serve, and respond with ability.
